100 Days for Mandalas – Session 4 – BALANCE – part two

100 Days for Mandalas – BALANCE

This is the second week of 100 days for Mandalas. The prompt and inspiration for these two weeks is BALANCE. Perhaps no symbol of balance is better than the yin-yang sign.  A circle of completeness that contains the duality of life – light & dark – male & female – black & white.  There is a balance of the forces of light and dark in the yin yang sign, but within each is the seed of the other.  There is movement within the sacred circle, as the duality creates the every changing manifestation of life.

I wanted to add ephemeral images and words to the four mandalas I created.  I wanted these additions to be impermanent, sometimes part of the finished mandala and other times a separate part. To me, this symbolizes the ever changing nature of the dance of balance and change. I put vellum over the watercolor paper and painted images and words.

The mandala above and its vellum cover sheet was inspired by what I consider the best book about color and its energies and powers.  It is titled  Simply Color, written by my friend Diantha Harris.  One of the most fascinating things mentioned in the book is that the yin yang sign originally was in the complementary colors of red and green. I created this mandala with yin yang sign, inspired by this color information.

On a personal note, Diantha is creating the 3rd edition of her book and has asked me to be a contributor.  More on this later.

This yin yang photo is one I took years ago in a beautiful park in the Native American neighborhood of Minneapolis.  The park is full of mosaic covered benches and other soft edged sculpural forms.  My favorite is the yin-yang mosaic on an undulating wall.
