I get chills when I see or play with watercolors that allow the flow of color and water to create beautiful unexpected patterns and movement. I especially get that surge of electricity when the watercolors are used in mandala making.
How to deepen and embody personal prayers through journaling, color, calligraphy and paint has been my quest for months.
Instead of 2019 New Year’s resolutions, intentions or goals, this is the year of “becomings”. “Becoming” is not a noun like goal, intention or resolution. It is a life force that gives birth to something new. It is motion and creation that is always growing. It is the active part of “to be”. “Becoming” lives inside of us and calls to our highest self. “Becoming” is not static, but dynamic and full of life both within us and as part of all creation. “Becoming” is flow, change, growing to fulfillment. “Becoming” at its highest is bathed in fierce heart energy, the flow of life, conviction, light, truth and courage.
Winter Solstice, when winter begins, is a time to honor both darkness and light. Winter is womb time, a quiet time of gathering energy within. It is a time of gestation of dreams, hopes and becomings. It is the in-breath needed for the co-creative out-breath expression of life.
Some of my most joyful and deepest creativity has been teaching at the Art & Soul Retreat*at Kanuga in North Carolina. It is a feeling of stepping into a stream so strong and deep that it takes me to a place where my soul feels at home, really at home.
As always the creativity that flows from my monthly Mandala Circles astound me. It inspires my preparing for next August workshop in North Carolina.
Teaching at the annual 5 day Art & Soul Retreat in North Carolina at Kanuga feeds my soul for the entire year. Our classroom cabin in the woods holds a deep and sacred space.
It was a week of inspiration in New Mexico. In Santa Fe I found this beautiful symbol on the statue of Mary in the grounds of the Santa Fe Cathedral Basilica.
I thought it would be a week of drawing dread, instead it turned into a joy to wake up and find something that calls me to be seen, deeply seen.
A Month of Drawing, Design or Doodling a Day. I’m very excited about my Kanuga 5 day spiritual art workshop. This is an online preparation.
Calm of Coloring Mandalas – Silence, Beauty, Fear. I finally made it to the Big Sur Hermitage. It was a roller coaster of peace, beauty and fear.Coloring mandalas calmed me down.
BE PEACE – DO PEACE. These are words I want to live by, need to live by, now. These mandalas were made a few days after the murder of 17 innocent school children.
We shared our creativity honoring the returning light and the time of open hearts. Mandalas #CreativityForTheSoul
A most beautiful book, The Lost Words, reclaims nature words removed from a children’s dictionary. Acorn was replaced with analog.
A Sacred Circle of Creativity workshop was a three-day journey into the mystery and manifestation of our own creativity. I am so thankful to the creative souls who joined me…
A Sacred Circle of Creativity – From Mystery to Manifestation & Back Again -Mother Earth, Mandalas, Meditation & Words. My new three-day workshop Oct. 12- 14. The golden pebble journey, as I call it, always takes place when I create a workshop.
Sacred Circle of Creativity – Sharing. A nurturing safe embracing place where a deep connection with our own personal truths and source is opened and expressed.
“Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light.”
For those new to a month for mandalas – please open this link and read the beginning of blog which explains it all. This is the last in the 4 part series LIGHT.
The Light of Creativity. The way we bring our light into the world is through our creativity. Our light shines most brightly when we are centered and connected to the source of our inner light.
“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” Maya Angelou
There is light from within and light that shines upon us. Our light comes from deep within our soul, from the womb of our being
STANDING UP FOR TRUTH “What you love is the cure” is an African proverb. How can my love for (fill in the blank) cure my life and the world?
Sharing Truth Tea. How I can go forward. A Month for Mandalas. Truth in Kinship – Family, Friends, Community, Creation, Creator.
A Month For Mandalas is a time of creative inspiration and expression. TRUTH is the inspiration for this session. Where do we find our own deepest truths, how do we know them and how do we go forward with them? Let your creativity be your guide.
I am so fortunate to be in a book group that shares the breadth and depth of shared books and our soul’s truths. Our last gathering of the year is a sharing of one poem each.
I recently created a set of pottery bowls inspired by the beauty of a glaze called Malcolm Davis Shino. Clay and pottery transformed and healed the life of Malcolm Davis after a time of great political turmoil in which he was intimately involved
My heart is broken. A physical pain stabs in my chest. How to heal from the shock? Our amazing country descending into votes for hate…I needed a place and a power to pour my tears. The Mississippi river called.
Once a month I hold a mandala circle at my home art studio. The mandala makers who come to share in this sacred circle of creativity always bring their light of creativity into the world.
It was some times hard to explain what the workshop was about. It was titled Creating Sacred Space In The Garden – Planting Prayers offered at Kanuga during the Faith, Art and Creative Expression conference in late August.
Creating Sacred Space in Garden -Planting Prayers was the title of the class I taught at Kanuga near Asheville, North Carolina … Sometimes described as a “thin” place, this Episcopal Retreat Center is a space where deep connection and community promotes and nurtures the weaving of faith, art and creativity.
Our mandala circle took place the night the world found out about the Orlando shootings. The mandala art created was about finding a way to peace, healing and stopping the hate.
These mandalas were created and inspired by a mandala circle of shared creativity and a meditation honoring silence.
My wish and joy is that this online space be an embrace of mandala community and sharing. I have no idea how wide and far this web of Creativity For The Soul spreads. I love to share mandalas created in workshops, circles and sent to me from near and far.
I wrote and illustrated this book in my early twenties. A friendship story based on a time while living in the Pacific Northwest.
Teaching at Kanuga F.A.C.E conference. Little did I know it would be a life-changing journey to my own and other’s deep creative heARTs.
I want the new year to be an inspiration to remember what calls to me from the depths of my soul. Reminders help me listen to what feels right on the deepest level, what brings joy and what stirs to action.
A Month for Mandalas – Loving Water
Planting Mandalas, Mindfullness & Prayers – Connection to Creativity & Nature.
Each week is inspired by one of the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. Water is this week’s inspiration.
Loving Fire – A Month For Mandalas. This is the third week of A Month for Mandalas – Session Two – Planting Mandalas, Mindfullness & Prayers – Connection to Creativity & Nature.
Loving Earth – A Month for Mandalas. The earth is our mother. It is our home, the home to all creatures who live on its surface. We are one with this earth. Planting Mandalas, Mindfullness & Prayers – Connection to Creativity & Nature.
I leave in less than a week for Kanuga near Asheville, North Carolina to teach a week-long course titled “Entering the Sacred Through Images, Words, Nature & Gardens”. Kanuga is a 1400 acre Episcopal retreat center. I can’t wait.
Here is my rewritten art journaling story about my stressful life in May as a garden designer. It has changed my life. The outcome is at the end of this blog.
This is the last week of 100 Days for Mandalas – Session 5 – The Gifts of Our Soul. It is a time for reflection. A time to find the essence of the entire session. That essence is “I am” and “We are”.
I am inspired by the creativity of those who come to learn about and experience mandalas in my workshops. A few weeks ago I had an all day workshop that showed me the we are all creative beings who are unique, perfect and “enough” in each expression.
“The authentic self is the soul made visible” Sarah Ban Breathnach. One way I feel that connection is by looking and seeing nature…I now have a new way of looking with a smartphone, tablet camera app that lets me create mandalas with the camera.
What feels authentic to me? Needing to play, express and go deep within. Needing to share those things with others. Mandalas and meditation are the vehicles that take me on that journey. A mandala is a sacred circle that embraces creativity. It can be any image within that sacred circle.
Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be.
A dear friend from another state called me last week and said I MUST MUST MUST look at the art of an amazing artist Susan O’Malley.
As we journey through life there are helpers who are there for us. Some are people, some are angels in the real sense and other like angels. Inspiration and guidance come in many forms. Often a rock found along a path calls
My mandala was inspired by the theme of JOURNEY for this three week session. Walt Whitman’s words bring to mind the fact that each of us is on a journey that only we can make. Although others join us on our journey, it is ours alone.
My mandala was inspired by the words of Mary Oliver. Sometimes there is an ache in the heart for the beauty of this earth. It is almost too much. Not the violence, heartache, horror. But the beauty that is too much to take in. Sometimes it feels like my heart isn’t big enough to give the love it deserves.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” (Marianne Williamson) This is the second week of 100 Days for Mandalas. It is a time to be inspired to delve into the deep creativity that reveals the mystery of who we are and guides us on our life journey.
Sharing of inspiration and creativity is what this blog is all about. I am always so thrilled to share the creativity of others. My monthly mandala circle get togethers are always a delight and amazement when other mandala makers create works of depth and beauty. Here are the first mandala sharings of this new year.
I didn’t know about the healing crowns that are being drawn and painted onto the bald heads of those who have lost hair because of chemotherapy treatments or alopecia, until a mandala maker friend Gail Haverdill sent me photos of her “Mandala Crown”
I never know how far the reach of my blogs is. I am always surprised and delighted when I hear from other mandala makers and creative folks…
Remember you are a holder of the Light. There is a burning light inside of all of us. It shines from within to guide the light of life on this planet. That light connects us to Creator and creation.
A Month for Mandalas – Week 4 – Remember Prayer. Remember connection with the Divine. Remember open heart to give and receive.
A Month For Mandalas – Week 2 – Remembering the Truth of Your Soul. We all have truths of who we are, who our authentic self is, what gifts we bring to the world are, what passions feed our souls. These truths are always inside of us, at our deep true core. In the quiet, in the flow of creativity these truths whisper to us. Remember them for they are always there.
This is the first day of the first week for A Month For Mandalas. Today is the day of balance of earth’s day and night, the equinox. It is a day of remembering our balance, of light and dark. The theme of this Month for Mandalas is Remember. Remembering the dreams of your soul, remembering the whispers and shouts of your true self.
A Month For Mandalas is a time of creative inspiration and expression. This first session of a month long mandala making time, will begin at the time of transition when the balance of night and day is equal – Monday September 22nd.
Rain is what nourishes us, the land, the waters and life. I am so thankful for the rains of this year where I live. I would like to send some to the parched lands. This mandala book is a rain prayer for the dry lands and the dry hearts we sometimes have.
May my hands touch the earth and heal the earth. May my hands touch others and heal both our hearts. May my hands be healing hands… Hands bring the healing touch to this world. My wish is for everyone to know and cherish their own healing hands.
Freedom is a word with many meanings, so many meanings. It has life and death meanings and consequences, and is something all humans strive for and deserve. Each person has their own striving, guided and pushed by that deep soul longing. 100 Days for Mandalas – FREEDOM
Isn’t it interesting how sometimes art opens up past experiences and reminds us of our life journey. The inspiration word “floating” inspired an art journal book that made me remember my experiences of floating. But it wasn’t until I was almost done with this book, that I remembered the most powerful floating experience I ever had.
Wordless Wednesday (almost), mandala sharing from monthly mandala get together at Linda Wiggen Kraft’s art studio. Mandala artists Linda Massie and Karen Martinez.
There is an art exhibit at my local library in University City, Missouri that showcases some of the most amazing art. Created by artists who make their art at the Turner Center for the Arts,
Mandalas – 100 Days for Mandalas, word prompt. The word HOME was the one that took me a long time to really examine what is “home” was, is and will be.
Home is a place inside our hearts where we are at home with ourselves. Where we feel safe, nurtured and centered. Let this word inspire your life and creativity.
I used the Feng Shui Bagua as the template as a way to look at the whole picture, creating mandalas for each section.
This two week session of 100 Days for Mandalas is brought to you by the word “pause”. I took a pause in getting this part of 100 Days for Mandalas out into the blogosphere.
AWAKE is the word meant to inspire this week. There are so many ways to be awakened. I found inspiration with words and pages of a journal portfolio that I made at a workshop in Utah a few years ago.
LISTENING – This is the second part of the two week period for 100 Days for Mandalas. A time for listening – to what we normally don’t hear. Listening not only with our ears but also with our bodies and our souls. Listening by being open, open to receiving. Receiving with open hearts.
This two week period for 100 Days for Mandalas is about listening. Listening to what we normally don’t hear. Listening not only with our ears but also with our bodies and our souls. Listening by being open, open to receiving. Receiving with open hearts.
This is the third week of the third session of 100 Days for Mandalas. The inspiration for this and the following week is PAUSE.
She hadn’t come for months, but made it to the last one a few weeks ago to finish the third mandala of a series of three, that have helped her through a very hard time
My turtle mandala
I love to see and share the mandalas created during my mandala workshop. I am always amazed at what is created. Here are the rest of the mandalas that were created at the April 20th workshop.
Mandala by Lisa Pieper
I have been drawn to using regular manila folders for creating art journaling mandalas. The are like mini-books.
Let these heart mandalas and images remind you to keep your heart open every day of the year. As we leave February, bring the heart energy of this month into all the months and days of your year.
February is the month we think about love and hearts. It is also Heart Awareness Month, to help bring awareness to our heart health.
This week is dedicated to the opening of hearts by all people, to send love and healing to all creatures and parts of our earth and beyond.
Today I am inspired by mandalas that show the power and beauty of hands, both the hands of humans and the hands of the Creator.
Creating art, and creating mandalas, is really about the process, not the product.
Today my only words are to share this beautiful quote by Buddhist Nun Pema Chodron about mandalas
Welcome to Day One of the 2nd session of 100 Days for Mandalas. This is a creativity retreat that will hopefully inspire the making of mandalas. It is a retreat in the quiet time, when the warmth of inner creativity burns as a fire in the center of the soul. There are many ways and reasons to make mandalas. Find your way and your reason, then join in.
This poem was shared by two dear friends. It was written by E Klingner, a friend of those who gave me this poem.
To me it says so much. The words ” until routine becomes ceremony” and “disregard detours – a trip around the world when you prefer instead full moons […]

MONDAY MANDALA INFORMATION, INSPIRATIONS & MEDITATION
MANDALA PROMPT – THE CALL TO CREATIVITY
We are all called to be givers of our own unique gifts to the world. Sometimes we don’t recognize we are co-creators of this world and this world calls to us to share our gifts. We are all artists […]
MONDAY MANDALA INFORMATION, INSPIRATIONS & MEDITATION
MANDALA PROMPT – AIR
This week’s theme – air – is inspired by week seven’s mandala called “Sacred Elements of Life: Air, Earth, Water, Fire”. Air is our atmosphere. It holds the oxygen that sustains our life as we and other animals breath. It holds […]
Humankind has made marks of patterns and images upon many surfaces. Those that have survived the longest are on stone. Nature herself makes patterns and images in many forms of creation. Take time to see mandala patterns – a […]
