Playing In Clay & Centering
June 29th, 2015
I can’t keep my hands out of the dirt, whether gardens or clay.
The gardens are almost all planted. Of course mine is last, shoemaker’s children kind of thing. I have been creating mandalas, more coming soon on the blog. I love all of that, but what also calls to me is the lure of clay. Porcelain and stoneware pull me into their world. The clay sings and talks to my hands. I am centered when I play with clay. And plant pots. They are 5.5″ wide and 6″ tall. A dried allium schubertii seed head from my garden is in one of the pots below.
A clay placque from an old iron gate imprint, 8″ x 12″.
Placque resting in 12 inch tall pot by Mona Shiber, an amazing ceramic artist friend. Here’s a blog I did about her before. And a link to her website.
Clay calls to me. One of my favorite books about art, creativity and soul is by a clay ceramic artist M.C. Richards titled Centering – In Pottery, Poetry and the Person.
This book is one of the first about personal growth, spirituality and transformation through creativity. It was first published in 1962, with many reprints since. Mary Caroline Richards greatly influenced theologian Matthew Fox in his Creation Spirituality. He wrote the forward to the book. I highly recommend it.
