Total Eclipse – In Our Front Yards – Sun & Moon & Earth Mandalas
Eclipse Mandala – Sun & Moon Discs – Karen Martinez
A week ago I lead a guided meditation about the awe and amazement we will experience when the total solar eclipse passes over us, our lands and homes as we stand in the alignment of sun, moon and earth. Light and dark will dance on the surfaces of our bodies and into the depths of our being.

All of the U.S. will experience a partial eclipse on Monday August 21st with only a narrow strip 70 miles wide experiencing both a partial and total eclipse. The shadow of the moon will fall across our land and most of Canada and Mexico. I live in the metro St. Louis area just outside the edge of the total eclipse. To be in the total eclipse area I have to go .8 miles from my house to where the darkness will last a mere 5.4 seconds. Further south near the center of the 70 mile strip the total eclipse will last a little over 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

In the recent mandala circle gathering we brought our awareness and creativity to this once in a lifetime event. All of us in the circle that night are fortunate to live in the area of the total solar eclipse. One of the mandala makers lives near the center of the total eclipse area where the length of deep darkness will be over two and a half minutes.

Here in Eastern Missouri, the partial eclipse (when the moon begins its journey in front of the sun) will start around 11:50 am central time. It will last almost three hours until around 2:44 pm. The total eclipse happens in the middle of those times around 1:15 pm with the moon totally blocking out the sun, except for the corona around the sun.
Moon Mandala – Christine Torlina
The solar eclipse follows a lunar eclipse on August 7th. The lunar eclipse, not visible in North America, takes place with a full moon when the earth casts a shadow on the moon because it is between the sun and moon.

Two weeks later on August 21st, on the new moon, the moon comes between earth and sun causing a solar eclipse.

What does this all mean, this dance of light and dark, shadow and illumination?
My Mandala – Hand of Light – Light of Moon
The moon is the archetype of the divine feminine, emotions and the hidden inner self. In the eclipse the dark mysterious side of the moon faces earth surrounded by the sun’s corona of light. It is a time for us to face the power of divine feminine, feelings and mystery.

It is a time to bring light into our world. New moons are times for new beginnings. The eclipse travels across the entire continental U.S. What new beginnings that bring light to the shadows will come about for our county and North America ? How can we be the light bringers? How can our creativity become that light?
